Mosca

That's another project that I'm working on right now. This one I gonna do alone and it is gonna be a very short film. I will try to begin production during july, if everything run smoothly until then...

The character was made in Flash and exported to Photoshop, as a png with alpha channel, were I did the background and effects. I always try to apply effects that I can easily emulate in After later.

This concept is just my first attempt into the style of the film. I liked the FX and textures. Not so much the composition, but that's just a test, so it's ok.

Taking a second look now I also didn't like the sound box, looks kind of over! Anyway.... it's enough.

Quickies

Hey, long time without a post.... You begin to feel that you need to post something when everybody begins to ask about it, or ask if you are very busy.... Well I'am super busy but also I have to take some time to draw now and then.

Quick Sketch with my new Cintiq :) Flash and Photoshop. 1:30Hrs to do it. Basically I did everything in Flash and just brought it to Photoshop to adjust some colours, put in the light and apply a little bit of blur and noise in everything.
The noise and blur is a "must use" when I'm doing something in Flash that I don't want to look like Flash. Of course it still looking like Flash but it also has a natural media felling in it...
I gonna try to do more quickies like that one from now on.

Cintiq 12WX

Finally!!! I waited and waited and waaaaited but is finally on my hands. MUAHAHAHAHA!
A quick review for the geeks :)
It is amazing! There is nothing like it as far I'm concern. The 21' is better but way out of my financial capability (In Brazil we pay 5 times the price that you can pay in America).
The main differences between both could be:

On the 21' you can draw rotating your elbow. On the 12' you can just draw rotating your wrist. That can make it seems too small but it isn't. It is the same size as those tablet pcs you see nowadays but with the best wacom technology available in it. Additionally I think that, with the 21' you get tired faster, waving your arm all around all the time, and with he 12' you can ultimately do things with less movements. BUT, of course, you have way more resolution and magnification with the 21'.... is like you can work the details seeing the hole thing at the same time. But is a matter of getting use to it, and if you never used the bigger one, you will not fill the difference.

On the 21' you can see what you are drawing, what is on your working area and the menus at the same time. On the 12' you will probably hide everything else to see just your drawing, or use a second monitor to put everything else. Frankly I found the second monitor thing a good idea but I didn't got used to it. First because I do not always use the cintiq when I sit on the computer, so there is no need to keep it on all the time. And second because I'm already used to hide my menus with keyboard shortcuts. So, when I'm using it, I prefer to use the shortcuts to show the menus on the same monitor them to keep looking to both monitors. Because of this I end up using the 'clone monitors' feature and not the 'dual view' feature.

I think that hiding the menus with shortcuts is not really a problem, it's actually a good idea since you never know where you gonna work next and what equipment they have. Shortcuts are something that you really want to keep the same, no matter your pipeline, cause is kind of hard to relearn them all the time.

And that's it, I can't say anything really bad about the 12WX Cintiq. It is DaBomb :)
I believe that you can make your work at least 100% better + 100% faster = 200% easier... And the more you use it, better and faster you will be.

Heal Emru

Hey everybody,
a very nice friend of mine needs help! He has Leukemia and he is looking for a matching donor for bone marrow transplant. You can learn how to help him and a lot of people in the same situation going to healemru.com

His best chance for a match comes from a donor who shares his ethnic background. He is the son of two African Carribean parents. But even if you think you are not a match for Emru, do your registry, is ease, and you can save the life of many other patients.

Flash Tool - Fast to Symbol 2 (BETA)

Introduction:
Convert a selection into a symbol positioning the center of the symbol at the mouse current position and do that without a symbol dialog box, making the symbolizing process faster and painless.

This is a essential tool. Much better them the default symbol conversion that comes with flash!

How it works:
Just select what you want to convert to symbol, put your mouse where you want the middle of the symbol to be and hit the command (This means that this command NEEDS TO be a shortcut... I use F8).

By default Fast to Symbol will create a graphic, single framed symbol using the default Flash naming of "Symbol" in all of them. You can change those settings in the menu.

Using the menu:
If nothing is selected when you hit the shortcut for the fast2symbol command a menu will open with several options so you can configure your preferences.

Choose symbol naming: Enter the name that you want as a default name for symbols.

Choose symbol type: You can choose between Graphic (default), Movie Clip and Button. If type is not Graphic the symbol loop is ignored!

Choose symbol loop:You can choose between Single Frame (default), Play Once and Loop.

After convertion: Choose between Keep Selection (default) of the symbol or deselect the symbol. Very useful if you draw everything and then you do a pass of symbol conversions before you animate.

Change Tool: Choose between Don't Change (default) your tool or change it to Free Transform. Very useful if you are animating and need to create more symbols on the fly, tween them etc...

Paint closed drawings: Choose between Paint or Don't Paint (default) closed drawings. It paints only the lines and fills on the selection. Very, very, very useful for fast animatics, storyboards and some kinds of stylized animation.

Choose painting color: Choose between 6 default colours to use on the Paint Closed Drawings process.

Tips:
The best way to work with symbols is to try to draw things horizontally or vertically as much as possible... Do your symbols like that and will be much easier to deform them later.

Instalation:
This extension was tested in FlashCS3 only!
You will need Adobe Extension Manager to install this tool.
If you already have it just Download the 2.1 release and double click it.

To install a new release just download the MXP file, double click it and replace the old files with the new ones!

If you dig this tool and want to help me develop more like this one, feel free to DONATE!

Bugs:
Known bugs of the 2.1 release:
-Doesn't fully work in other versions of Flash (just in Flash CS3).
known bugs of the 2.0 release:
-When using the paint feature and Fill color is set to "none" on the Flash toolbar panel: Crashes Flash!!!

Merry Merry!

Some work for xmas! The first one is a wipe of presents (3 days to paint and animate)... I gonna put the animation online soon! Done for Didi Tv Show.

The second one was a little scene to close the same TV show! I reused the boxes because of the time constrains. 2 days to paint everything.

Marco Polo

Those are some character designs for a Flash film that should go to web and television. That means that it should be small enough to download and fast enough to play in a computer but also it must have some television quality in it! Lots of symbols were reused... All the characters in red suits and the two guys in the middle are the same guy (Marco Polo) ; the two guys in purple are his uncles. Total working time: 3 days.

Flash Tool - Fast Tween

Introduction:
Assign tweens to layers automatically.

How it works:
F3: Switch between no tween, harmonic and constant tween.
F2: Assign ease in tween.
F4: Assign ease out tween.

You can Assign tweens to the selected layers or, if no layers are selected, to the unlocked layers.
All the tweens assign are custom curves.
Harmonic tweens are slower at the beginning and the end of the movement.

Instalation:

You NEED TO assign F2, F3 e F4 shortcuts to this one command to make it work properly.

You will need Adobe Extension Manager to install this tool.
If you already have it just Download the tool and double click it.

Flash Tool - Turn to Ghost (BETA)

Introduction:
Switch layers between ghost(guide with a grey colour) state and the layer initial state(before the use of the tool).

How it works:
Select a group of layers (like 2 or 3) and hit the tool to make them ghosts. Now select all layers (ctrl+alt+A) and hit the tool again to exchange the ghost for the non-ghost layers. This tool is very useful to render different group of layers in separated archives (Like, to bring separated layers to composition in After Effects for example).

The ghost layer are nothing but a guide layer with a especial grey colour (#e6e6e6) on it!
That means that: If you create a guide layer by the layer properties menu and change it colour to the grey above you got yourself a ghost layer :)

The difference between the Turn2Guide and Turn2Ghost is that now you can turn a guide layer, a guided layer, a mask layer or a masked layer into a ghost or back to their initial states and switch very fast between both states in all layers at once. Even if you save and open the file again Flash will remember the initial state and organization (parenting) of the layers.

Known bugs so far:
This is a BETA tool which means that it stills in development. Below a list of known bugs:

  • It doesn't work perfectly with closed folders yet!
If you got yourself a new bug with this tool please report it with a comment at this post and help me to help everybody else :)

Instalation:
You will need Adobe Extension Manager to install this tool.
